It's bittersweet, rather than tragic.There's strength and hope in Madison's decision to call off the wedding rather than settle for an approximation of love. And that's the general tone this episode strikes across the board. This Is Us tends to save its most dramatic cliffhangers for its midseason finales, rather than its season-enders. And a lot of "The Adirondacks" is a fairly light, almost madcap comedy punctuated by moments of reconciliation. Beth and Tess break through their communication issues and share a lovely mother/daughter bonding moment as Beth helps Tess modify her wedding attire to fit her newfound style. And Rebecca begins the process of making amends to Randall for hiding William from him and never giving him space to discuss his feelings about his birth parents.
In the previous episode, Kevin overcame his doubts about Madison by heeding stepfather Miguel's advice that not every love story is an epic Hollywood tale. But Madison tells Kevin that she deserves to be marrying a man who is in love with her, and not just as the mother to his children. This Is Us season 5 is heartwarming, heartbreaking, has good twists and endearing moments. The makers have cut down two episodes and gave us only 16 episodes this season. While that's a complaint, the latest season has been far away from any disappointment.
Randall and Kate have come a long way, and their characters have developed a lot. But Kevin is behind in the race, and we wonder if there's anything good coming for and from him in the sixth season, which is the series finale. While showing the present and the past, there are some scenes where the trio's kids are adults.
That's another time jump that will be addressed in the final season. It's been more than a season since it was confirmed that Rebecca is suffering from Alzheimer's disease and it has caused concern for the people closest to her. This plotline was somewhat sidelined in This Is Us season 5 partly because the show had to make concessions to push through with production during the pandemic. However, the season finale clearly teased that it will be a major factor in the show's final year as it should since it will expectedly revolve around her life and future death. In the episode's final group scene, Rebecca admitted to her kids that it's becoming more difficult to visualize Jack with them.
We'll start with Kevin, who had a lot going on when we left him back in March. Had an enormous fight with Randall in which he told his adopted brother that the worst day of his life was the day his parents brought Randall home. This blowup happened because Kevin and Randall deeply disagree on what is best for their mother, Rebecca, in light of the news that she's probably in the early stages of Alzheimer's. Randall wanted his mother to go to a clinical trial in St. Louis, she agreed, then changed her mind after she spent a day with Kevin and decided she wanted to stay near her family.
She then switched her choice back to the clinical trial after Randall called and begged her to reconsider. When Kevin found out that Randall had gone behind his back and asked their mom to do the clinical trial, he was enraged. 'This is Us' Season 5 Episode 15 titled "Jerry 2.0" will have Kevin and Madison spend their days closer to their wedding. This will be the penultimate episode while the wedding will supposedly happen on the season finale. In this episode, we will witness the bachelor and bachelorette parties. These might not be the typical ones filled with a wide variety of cliches where one sees the scantily-clad dancers or random bar-hopping.
But Kevin's Bachelor party is about to be inculcated with much more drama. Here in the upcoming episode, we will deal with Kevin's last-minute jitters as it appears that he is getting cold feet. His previous experiences with women in his life have started to taint his imagination.
This has caused him to worry about his future with Madison. Kevin's panic over wedding logistics belies a man panicked about his future, while brief flashbacks economically flesh out the low self-worth that has defined Madison's life so far. (And led her to that weight loss group way back in the show's pilot.) The scene where she finally calls off the wedding is brutal, but incredibly well-done. Though Kevin desperately fights to save his dream of a perfect nuclear family, he can't even bring himself to say he loves the woman he's about to marry. Deep down, they both know it's better to cut their losses rather than go through with something they'll regret.
Madison enters Kevin's room as he is preparing for the day. Kevin claims that they are getting married and starting a family. She claims to be in love with him, despite the fact that she is well aware that this is a cliche. Her mother gave her these earrings before abandoning her to a father who offered her nothing.
She has always accepted whatever crumbs of affection anyone would offer her, and she has always accepted whatever scraps of affection anyone would give her. He says he admires what they have and are building, and that he believes they are amazing. He also says he enjoys watching her with their children and that he feels good when they are together. He admits that they didn't meet under regular conditions, but that what they have will blossom.
Kevin wishes to spend more time with her and their children. Kevin is flippant about the difficulties of long distance, which Sophie doesn't agree with.
On that note, Rebecca brings the two couples and Kate up to the cabin for the weekend. The final season premiere of NBC's time-hopping family drama aired Tuesday, setting up fans of the show for one final emotional run with the Pearson family. In the morning, Rebecca awakes to find all three kids standing by their bedside, staring in creepy silence, until finally, Kate asks her parents if they still love each other. Jack and Rebecca show the kids their wedding tape to prove their love.
They try to recover by claiming they're so in love that married couples hate them for it, but unsatisfied, the kids declare their parents must get married again. This Is Us has spent the bulk of Season 5's present-day storyline working on Kevin and Randall's estrangement. The Season 4 finale blowout has been a running thread underlining both characters' journeys. But with Season 5, Episode 13, "Brotherly Love," the long-running plot seemed finally put to bed after a hard conversation. So, with three episodes left until the finale, where does the show go next?

For Kevin, that means potentially reconnecting with Sophie and perhaps even restarting their romance.
At this point, it's clear that the pair is meant for each other that it would be a disappointment if they don't end up together. Meanwhile, there are some very difficult times ahead for Toby and Kate as This Is Us shows the destruction of their marriage, leading to Number 2 marrying Phillip. Admittedly, Kevin and Madison's decision to not push through with their wedding wasn't that surprising. There had been red flags throughout their relationship and while it's possible that they could've made it work, it made so much more sense that they didn't tie the knot.
However, the biggest shocker of the This Is Us season 5 finale was the revelation that Kate and Toby ultimately break up. The pair was so confident that they could make it work, but in the mini-flash-forward, it's revealed that they, unfortunately, didn't; the couple parted ways with Kate marrying her current boss, Phillip. While Kevin was outright committed to becoming a father to his twins, it wasn't a walk in the park to find the perfect dynamic with Madison. Number 1 proved that he's learned his lessons and is no longer one to run away from responsibilities, hence why it didn't take long for him to propose to the mother of his kids.
Once Nick and Franny were born, the unusual couple focused on tying the knot which was going to be the big event for the This Is Us season 5 finale. But although Kevin had come to terms with the idea of getting married again, Madison realized that she couldn't push through with the wedding because it's clear that her fiancé doesn't love her. In the present day, the Pearson brothers talk about Randall's adoption and his struggle to come to terms with his idea of a family. A part of Randall always imagined what life would be like had he not been adopted, which made him feel very guilty. He has always loved the Pearsons, but not being able to talk about his birth parents made him feel imprisoned. Randall did not want to come across as ungrateful to Jack and Rebecca.
After a roller coaster of a heartfelt conversation, Kevin finally realizes the part he has played in hurting Randall, and the two brothers seem to be on the same page. At the end of last night's show, it looked like Kevin was getting cold feet. In a first look at the last episode before the wedding finale, Kevin gives his ex-wife Sophie a call. He later admits, "Talking to her made me confused," and is seen asking his brother for advice.
"How does anyone ever really know who they're supposed to marry? After a shot of Kevin staring down at Sophie's contact in her phone, the promo comes to a close, leaving us with just enough juicy info to hold on until next week. In her bones, Madison always knew Kevin wasn't in love with her. With the amount of dangling threads this finale opens up, I have no idea whatThis Is Us' final season is going to look like. We've now got three major flash-forward timelines to work towards, including a lot of teases in that five-year jump. In addition to Kate's wedding, we learn Kevin has fulfilled his dad's dream of launching Big Three Homes, Nicky has a wife, and Randall has been dubbed a "rising star" by a swanky New Yorker profile. I'm assuming next season will largely focus on those threads, and I'm wondering if it might be set across a longer period of time than the show's usual year-in-the-life mode.
The Randall/Rebecca scenes, in particular, are really moving—even if it feels like we sort of have to write our own ideas about where her newfound openness comes from. "The Adirondacks" zeroes in on a lot of Pearson family defense mechanisms, like the way Kevin defuses tension with humor or Randall carefully steers difficult conversations towards small talk pleasantries. Kevin then asks if he can make a joke at his brother-in-law's expense, revealing that the formerly indifferent co-worker is Kate's future husband. Meanwhile, Kevin also compliments Randall on an article that calls him a "rising star," vaguely hinting at success for the political Pearson.
Needless to say, there's a lot of change on the horizon, but it would also seem that happiness is as well with the show's upcoming sixth and final season. In a past timeline, Rebecca is furious when Jack tapes over a big wedding finale episode of Dynasty. Their spat leads to uncertainty when the young Big 3 questions if the couple still loves each other. In one last-ditch effort to reassure their children, Rebecca and Jack agree to get married again including the kids in the vows for a sweet living room ceremony. The final scene of Tuesday's season finale jumped four years ahead to show Kate — gasp! Ever since the shocking time-jump finale of season three, a seed had been planted that Kate and Toby might split up in the future.

That jump to the distant future also came with the reveal that Jack has a sister, played by Adelaide Kane, who comes to visit her newborn niece. After a longer-than-usual wait between seasons, fans will finally reunite with the Pearson clan when the fifth season of "This Is Us" premieres tonight on NBC. And because of that longer-than-usual wait, we're willing to bet that even the biggest Big Three lovers might not remember exactly where we left America's favorite family when the Season 4 finale aired back in March. "We're trying to capture something we haven't done on the show, which is a lovely married couple maybe not making it all the way," he told Entertainment Weekly.
"It was something we always knew we were going to attack it in our final season." Since This Is Us prides itself on realistic storylines, season 5 also incorporated the coronavirus into its narrative. It's a divisive creative move, but it also allowed the show to justify the characters spending time apart and wearing masks during actual scenes for safety purposes. That said, it also forced This Is Usseason 5 to change its original plan, making it more intriguing to see how its final season will play out. And it looks like things aren't going to get easier anytime soon.
Watching this heartfelt but also scattered finale, it's hard not to think about what this season of This Is Us might have been if the show hadn't decided to make the pandemic part of its storytelling. If it had followed through on Rebecca attending the clinical trial in St. Louis and the dark turn Randall took in coercing her to sign up for it. Hell, I'm even just curious what this existing season would've looked like if it hadn't been shortened by two episodes. But, like Kevin and Madison, we have to deal with the reality of what's in front of us, not the dream of what we wish things could be.
And, on the whole, I think "The Adirondacks" does a fairly effective job putting a capper on this uneven season. It's an effective twist because This Is Us has trained us to expect flash-forwards to either Rebecca's deathbed or Baby Jack's future in its finales. Plus "The Adirondacks" makes a point of selling the wholesome, supportive nature of Kate and Toby's marriage, as they briefly try to "Gift Of The Magi" each other over his new job in San Francisco. In fact, one of my big complaints about this episode was going to be that it resolved Kate and Toby's marital issues way too easily after a season of deep communication issues.
But, as is frequently the case, it turns out This Is Us has a longer, more unexpected endgame in mind. Sometime in the next few years, Kate and Toby's present day happiness gives way to a whole new relationship for her. Suddenly it makes a lot more sense why Toby seems so lonely in the Rebecca's deathbed timeline.
